Basic Technician Certificate in Forestry

Target Students

The Institute offers a Basic Technician Certificate in Forestry which is designed to enter NTA Level 5 training or work in lower ranks of Forestry or Natural Resource Agencies, NGOs and private sector organizations.

Program Duration

The Basic Technician Certificate program is a one – year program. The program runs once per academic year from July to June.

Program Objectives

The main objectives of the course are:

  • To inculcate into learners appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles required for following up the subject matter of forestry and related disciplines; and
  •  To instill a sound foundation in communication and entrepreneurship into the trainees.

Training Methodology

Training approaches include lectures, interactive structured lectures, directed and self-directed study, seminars, tutorials, student presentations, and field and institute-based practical training exercises.

Program Assessment and Award

The assessment method includes assignments, practical work, classroom tests and end of module final examination. Students need to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours from fundamental modules, core modules and extra curricula activities in order to qualify for NTA level 4 Award. These credits are gained through passing all assessed Basic Certificate modules. In order to pass Basic Certificate modules, students must achieve a final module mark of not less than 50% (continuous assessment and final examination), and in addition, must pass both continuous assessment (course work) and final examination by at least 50%. Module continuous assessment is 40% and the final examination is 60% of the final module mark, unless stated otherwise.

Entry Qualifications

The candidate must at least have a Certificate of Secondary Education (or equivalent) with at least four (4) credits (D and above passes). Among these passes should be either Biology or Geography or Chemistry or Physics or Agriculture. Mathematics and English are added advantages to applicant.

The Ordinary Diploma in Forestry is designed for those who want to enter NTA Level 7 training or work in middle ranks of Forestry or Natural Resource Agencies, NGOs and private sector organizations.

The Ordinary Diploma in Forestry is a one – year program. The program runs once per academic year from July to June.

The main objectives of course:

  • To inculcate among learners appropriate skills, knowledge and understanding of the scientific principles required for following up the subject matter of Forestry and related disciplines; and
  • To inculcate a sound foundation in communication and entrepreneurship.

Training approaches include lectures, interactive structured lectures, directed and self-directed study, seminars, tutorials, student presentations, Special projects, and field and institute-based practical training exercises.

The candidate must at least have Technician Certificate in Forestry (NTA Level 5) or its equivalent from recognized institutions by NACTE; or have Advanced Level Certificate of Secondary Education or its equivalent with a principal pass in Biology or Chemistry or Geography or Agriculture science or Physics and subsidiary pass in any subjects.
